State of Massachusetts Recreation Officer I in Milford, Massachusetts

Positions will be assigned within the Northern & Southern Region areas to include Shirley, Framingham, Gardner, Bridgewater, and Norfolk. * * Duties: All applicants under consideration will be subject to a physical abilities test, psychological test, drug test, submit to a full background check and be required to have a medical form filled out by your physician before entering a twelve (12) week Recruit Academy. Incumbents of this position develop individual therapeutic and rehabilitative goals and objectives for incarcerated individuals of correction institutions; plan and organize recreational, social, instructional or special activities for incarcerated individuals; recommend use of recreational areas; motivate incarcerated individuals to participate in recreational activities; conduct training sessions for correction personnel and incarcerated individuals in such areas as types of services available; determine activities for recreational programs; requisition supplies and equipment; maintain custodial care and control of incarcerated individuals, patrol correctional facilities; observe conduct and behavior; investigate suspicious incarcerated individual activity; enforce rules and regulations; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to meet therapeutic and rehabilitative objectives and goals for incarcerated individuals of correction, institutions through participation in individual and/or group activities or sports in accordance with incarcerated individuals' needs and capabilities and to maintain care and custody of incarcerated individuals. · May assist Correction Officers by conducting pat searches, watching the compound, and preparing incident and disciplinary reports in accordance with Institution polices to help maintain security; Maintains daily attendance records, monthly statistics, good time credits and quarterly report information in accordance with institution requirements to provide accurate operational data; Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Maintains custodial care and control of incarcerated individuals by escorting or transporting them under restraint; patrolling facilities; making periodic rounds, head counts and security checks of buildings, grounds, and incarcerated individual quarters; monitoring incarcerated individuals' movements and whereabouts; and guarding and directing incarcerated individuals during work assignments to maintain order and security in a correctional institution. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of the practices in supervision; Knowledge of a variety of individual and group recreational activities such as softball, basketball, volleyball, etc. Knowledge of the factors, trends, and problems in providing recreation services to special client groups such as correctional institution populations. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in general recreation and/or physical education; Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and materials of recreation or physical education; Ability to give clear oral instructions; Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others; Ability to exercise leadership in group situations; Ability to maintain accurate and timely records and information. Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural, and/or economic backgrounds; Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations; Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, supervise and stimulate interest in recreational activities; Ability to plan, assign and coordinate the activities of others; Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence; Ability to exercise leadership in group situations.* *Comments: * This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instructing or conducting therapeutic and rehabilitative recreation services in a correction institution of which (B) one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in recreation, recreation education or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience. II.
